Latest News on Volkswagen Emissions Scandal

The Volkswagen scandal has grown to be even wider in scope than previously thought, as certain Porsche and Audi cars have now been drawn into the mix. This is the first time that a Porsche model car has been named in the scandal.

The following cars have now been deemed affected:

  • 2014 VW Touareg
  • 2015 Porsche Cayenne
  • 2016 Audi A6 Quattro
  • 2016 Audi A7 Quattro
  • 2016 Audi A8
  • 2016 Audi A8L
  • 2016 Audi Q5

The German auto manufacturer is faced with allegations of installing software designed to fraudulently defeat emissions tests on their diesel vehicles from 2008 to 2015, prompting numerous government investigations fronted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has reported that Volkswagen has since admitted to these allegations.

The software would be able to detect when it was being tested for smog based on the speed, angle of the wheel, and duration of engine operation. Once these inputs were detected, the cars would compensate and emit fewer emissions, providing false readings from what actual road performance would normally indicate. Estimates indicate that under normal conditions, the cars would emit a level of pollution nearly 40 times greater than what the readings would suggest.

In total, it is estimated that nearly 11 million cars have been affected, with close to half a million of them being owned by Americans. The automaker could be facing a crippling $18 billion worth of fines. A recall is expected, though repairing all of the affected vehicles could potentially take years to complete. It is estimated that each car may take up to 10 hours of work to update the software and fix the internal mechanisms.
