As time goes on and more and more information is revealed about the Volkswagen
diesel emissions cheating scandal, we are getting a fuller picture of
just how much the company knew about the issue. Contrary to earlier claims
on the part of the automaker that the issue was not widely known internally,
as the executives attempted to achieve plausible deniability, a recent
report from German newspaper
Bild am Sonntag reveals that VW’s former chief executive did have information about
the problem. Martin Winterkorn is reported to have received an email from
a subordinate employee in May of 2014 concerning the equipment which was
installed for the purpose of deceiving emissions testing equipment. Winterkorn
has since resigned from his position at Volkswagen, though at the time
of his departure he insisted that he had done nothing wrong.
